Introduction to Making Gumbo

Okay…so I believe the serious Cajun chef would not call my attempt Gumbo. But I was proud of my start.

After putting Titus down to bed tonight, I realized my family would be arriving home in an hour and I’d not considered what to serve them for dinner. After rummaging around in the pantry and freezer I whimsically opted to overcome a personal fear…making roux…a necessary step in making Gumbo and other delicious Cajun dishes. Read more…

Saying Goodbye to Mobile, Alabama

My sister is leaving Mobile, Alabama. Her husband accepted a new job in Atlanta, Georgia. They’ve sold their home and in a week they’ll move. She is my final link to my hometown.

The Truth of July 4th in Vicksburg, Mississippi

As a kid growing up in Alabama, a generous portion of each of my years of U.S. History studies was dedicated to the Civil War. I’ve always preferred to understand trends and the bottom line, rather than to retain details, so unfortunately I don’t remember much about these months of studies, other than a few of the overarching reasons for the war. (Like any good Alabama-educated girl, I recently had a debate with a friend regarding states’ rights versus federal governmental rights.) Read more…
