Chuy’s with the Family
Gary, Kenny’s older brother, and his family came to town a couple weeks ago to visit relatives on a different branch of their family tree. Yeah for other relatives to bring our family to town!
That Saturday night we met up and all went to Chuy’s for dinner. Chuy’s is a staple of life in Austin. If you ever come to Austin, if you don’t go anywhere else, go to Chuy’s.
It’s a very eclectic Tex-Mex restaurant, that grew from a single start up in Austin to a limited chain across the state. Bright colors and tacky decor rule the restaurant. I’ll say this about the food. From now on, when I’m outside of Texas and missing Tex-Mex cuisine, it will be Chuy’s on my mind. Serious spicy heat and creative Southwest ingredients are married with comfort food that would make any grandma proud at Chuy’s.
I’ve been to Chuy’s a couple times now. My first visit I had the Baja Tacos which were tortillas filled with fried shrimp, cilantro, red cabbage and Chuy’s signature creamy jalapeƱo dressing. They were so good, I considered ordering them again, but after a long look at the menu, I decided to definitely venture out.
This time I had the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken. They bread a chicken breast with Lay’s potato chips, deep fry it and smother it with a green chile sauce and cheddar cheese. YUMMY!
We spent several hours at Chuy’s. On a Saturday night, we definitely expected a wait and with our size crowd we waited an hour. But we enjoyed catching up, laughing and eating chips and dip from the salsa bar while we waited. Chuy’s touts their good service and it’s true. They definitely knows how to keep their waiting crowd happy.
So Gary and company? How about an annual tradition? See you at Chuy’s next year when you’re in town.
