Fannie Flagg

Have you read anything by Fannie Flagg?

I love my book club here in Austin. The girls have been really welcoming. And they just introduced me to Fannie Flagg. How did I miss this woman?

She’s an author from Alabama and is famous for her bestseller Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. I think I’ll go join my new library and look for that one soon.

I just finished Standing in the Rainbow. When I was a kid I read quite a number of books set in the fifties. Anyone heard of Homer Price? I loved him. As a kid reading about kids in that time, life sounded like a dream. Youngsters could wander all over town with all kinds of freedom because the world seemed to be a safe place. How much of that was true and how much of that was literature I wonder?

Standing in the Rainbow gave me that same warm fuzzy feeling.

Next time you need a smile on your face and some warmth in your heart, look for Fannie Flagg.

P.S. She also wrote a cookbook – The Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook Featuring Fried Green Tomatoes. I love this girl!

Hey sweetie! Life really was that good in the 50’s!! I can remember getting on my bike in the morning, rounding up a few friends and being gone all day – just hanging, playing ball, and enjoying life! We had 3 (yes, I said 3) TV stations, mostly black and white shows, and since most of them were pretty boring, we found our fun outdoors! And no one worried about their kids – we were safe – most everyone’s mom was at home and if you dared to act up – you knew your parents would hear about it before you got to your front door – because all the parents knew each other – played bridge together – dined out together – and most families were 2 parent families. In fact, I don’t think I remember any of my friends coming from a divorced home! Sad, isn’t it?! I’m 62 and that is how much the world has changed in 50 years! I wish my kids and grandkids and your T-boy could grow up in the world I grew up in! It truly was a magical time – but only in retrospect. I don’t think we truly appreciated it at the time! Ahhhhh – the good old days! Enjoy Fannie Flagg – she’s one of my all time favorites! And, if you get back this way anytime soon, I’ll take you to the real Whistle Stop Cafe – in Glendale, right next to the train tracks! It’s a great place, with the best Asparagus Cassarole you’ve ever eaten and – yes, you guessed it – killer fried green tomatoes! Love you. . .
